The Müller-Thurgau varietal is a type of white grape that is a cross between Riesling and Madeleine Royale grapes. It was developed in 1882 by a Swiss botanist named Hermann Müller from the Canton of Thurgau, hence the name.
The vine is hardy and known for its ability to adapt to varying climates and soil types, making it a popular grape to cultivate. The grapes usually ripen early and can produce high yields. Its wines are often used in German Liebfraumilch and are typically light in flavor, featuring floral aromas and a slight touch of spice, often compared to flavors of peach, apricot, apple, and pear.
However, Müller-Thurgau wines are not known for their ability to age and are usually best consumed young. Traditionally, it is the second most planted white wine grape variety in Germany, right after Riesling. However, it's also found in several other countries, including Italy, England, Austria, and New Zealand.
