Slovakia, officially known as the Slovak Republic, is a landlocked country located in Central Europe. It is bordered by Poland to the north, Ukraine to the east, Hungary to the south, Austria to the west, and the Czech Republic to the northwest. The country's capital and largest city is Bratislava.
Slovakia covers about 49,035 square kilometers and has a population of over 5.4 million people. The country is known for its dramatic natural landscapes, featuring towering mountains, picturesque valleys, and beautiful rivers. This includes the High Tatras, which are the highest part of the Carpathian mountain range.
The country's history dates back to the 9th century when Slavic inhabitants established a state centering around Moravia. Slovakia joined the Kingdom of Hungary in the 10th century, where it remained until it became part of the Czechoslovak federation after World War I. It separated from the Czech Republic peacefully in 1993, in what is often referred to as the 'Velvet Divorce', leading to the creation of two independent countries: Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
Slovakia is now a high-income advanced economy with a high Human Development Index. It joined NATO and the EU in 2004, and later, in 2009, became a part of the Eurozone. The country's economy is diversified, with sectors including automotive, metallurgy, chemical, food, information technology, and electrical engineering.
The country is known for its rich folk tradition, with hundreds of folk and ethnographic festivals taking place across the country each year. Its official language is Slovak, and the country has a majority Christian population, primarily of the Roman Catholic faith.
