Description

Jim and Terri Delfino came to the Umpqua Valley of Southern Oregon in 2000 and planted the 18 acres that make up the Hillside and Creekside vineyards. They have 7 varietals planted, including Tempranillo, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Dolcetto (an Italian grape), Zinfandel, Merlot and Müller Thurgau. The rocky hillsides of their vineyards are warmed by the setting sun and produce quality grapes which, combined with wild native yeasts, deliver wines of unique character and perfect balance.

So...what are wild native yeasts and what does it matter? Native yeasts are many and varied. They live in our environment and are deposited on the fruit (like the haze you polish off those plums in the store). Rather than extinguishing these yeasts and adding a commercial yeast to begin fermentation, native, wild yeasts are allowed to survive and to provide a spontaneous fermentation. With native yeasts you get layers of flavor because each yeast gives its own flavor to the wine as it converts sugar into alcohol during the fermentation process. When drinking Delfino wines made using grapes and yeasts grown only in their vineyard, you will experience more of the terroir that is unique to Delfino Vineyards.

Part of their vineyard is dedicated to a Southern Oregon climate research program which includes additional red and white varietals. Visitors can walk the rows, taste the fruit and observe the changes and differences in varietals. They are also partnered with the UCC viticulture and enology program, which enables students to work in the industry to earn extra credits. They have been blessed this year with the assistance of several students who helped them plant, prune and harvest their grapes.

Delfino Vineyards is also home to a 5-star Bed & Breakfast since 2002. The cozy wine country cottage offers a complimentary bottle of Delfino wine upon check-in. The cottage is air-conditioned and furnished with full amenities, including a hot tub, lap pool and hiking trails. A delicious breakfast is brought to your door each morning and includes signature cranberry scones, which you will be tasting today with their Zinfandel Rosé. It is truly a restful and relaxing place to come and unwind and enjoy warm country hospitality.

In 2009 they opened their charming tasting room, which reflects the warmth of a Tuscan sunset as it overlooks the beautiful vineyard, lake and mountain views. It is a perfect place to sample their award- winning estate grown wines, including Syrah, Zinfandel, Tempranillo, Cabernet, Müller Thurgau and Zinfandel Rosé. They offer picnic areas, weddings, events and vineyard tours by request and are RV friendly! They are now open daily year round (except Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas & New Year’s days). Delfino means “ dolphin“ in Italian, thus the dolphin logo!

Whether you taste their wine, walk in the vineyard or stay in their B&B guest cottage, the Delfinos hope you have a truly memorable experience You will be able to taste the difference and to “taste the place“ that is Delfino Vineyards.
