Pinot Meunier is a variety of black wine grape that plays a crucial role in the production of Champagne. It is considered to be the less glamorous sibling of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, which are the other two key components of classic Champagne. As a varietal wine, Pinot Meunier is often characterized by its fresh fruit flavors, early maturity, and high yield.
Due to its higher acid content and lighter body, it's not usually used on its own to produce wine, but rather as a blending grape to add freshness and acidity to blends. Its fresh aromas often include red fruits such as cherry, raspberry or plum.
The name "meunier" stems from the French word for miller, a reference to the flour-like dusting on the underside of its leaves which look as though they have been dusted in flour. The grape has high frost resistance which makes it very useful in regions that have harsh frosts. It is mostly grown in France, particularly in the Champagne region, although it can be found in wine regions around the world.
