Gamay is a purple-colored grape variety used to produce red wines, most notably grown in Beaujolais and in the Loire Valley around Tours. Its full name is Gamay Noir à Jus Blanc. It is a very old cultivar, mentioned as long ago as the 15th century.
The wines produced are light bodied and fruity, typically with flavors of cherries, raspberries, and bananas, with undertones of spices and flowers. They are usually high in acidity and can have low tannins, which make them easy to drink at a young age.
Beaujolais Nouveau, a popular wine made from Gamay grapes, is released annually on the third Thursday of November. Despite its light flavors, Gamay can also be used to make serious, complex wines that can age for several years, particularly those from the Cru Beaujolais regions.
