Vancouver Island is located in the northeastern Pacific Ocean, in the southwestern part of Canada's British Columbia. It is named after George Vancouver, the British Royal Navy officer who explored and mapped the Pacific Northwest coast of North America between 1791 and 1794.
Vancouver Island is the 43rd largest island in the world and Canada's 11th largest island. It has a population of over 870,000 people and its largest city is Victoria, which is also the capital of British Columbia.
The island is known for its mild climate and diverse ecosystems. It is heavily forested and has an extensive mountainous terrain, providing excellent outdoor adventure opportunities such as hiking, fishing, and skiing. It is also home to several National Parks and protected areas.
The island's west coast is particularly well known for its long, sandy beaches and the world-class surf. The east coast is dotted with picturesque small towns and boasts plenty of marinas for boating enthusiasts.
The island has strong Indigenous cultural presence, with the Nuu-chah-nulth, Kwakwaka'wakw, and Coast Salish peoples among the main Native groups residing here.
Moreover, Vancouver Island is a thriving hub for arts and culture, with numerous galleries, theatakers, and a dynamic music scene. The island is also famous for its locally sourced cuisine and a growing number of vineyards and craft breweries.
In spite of all the urban and cultural features, much of the island remains relatively unspoiled, with spectacular untouched wilderness attracting nature-lovers from across the globe. It offers excellent wildlife watching opportunities including whales, eagles, and the island's own subspecies of black bear.
