Waiheke Island is located in the Hauraki Gulf of New Zealand. Just about a 40-minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland, this island is the second-largest in the gulf and has the third-largest population of any island in New Zealand. It is roughly 19.3 kilometres (12.0 miles) from tip to tip.
The island is known its warm and dry micro-climate, beautiful beaches, vineyards, olive groves, and a distinct community of artists and musicians. Some of the popular beaches include Onetangi Beach, Palm Beach and Little Oneroa Beach. It is also home to several wineries that offer tours and tastings like Mudbrick Vineyard and Stonyridge Vineyard.
The island’s population varies markedly at different times of the year due to the high number of seasonal and holiday homes. As of 2013 census, its usually resident population was around 8340, but the total population can swell significantly over summer.
In general, Waiheke Island provides a beautiful mix of farmland, forest, beaches and seaside villages and has something for everyone, whether you're looking for outdoor adventure, a quiet retreat, or a cultural experience. It was named as one of the world’s top 10 regions to visit for 2016 by Lonely Planet.
Note: The impact of COVID-19 could affect some activities, businesses, and transportation to and on the island. It is always a good idea to check the latest information before planning a visit.
