Dão is a wine region in Portugal known for producing both high-quality red and white wines. It is named after the Dão river, which runs through the region. The region's unique climate and granite-based soil contribute significantly to the distinctive flavor of the wines.
The Dão region is particularly famous for its red wines, which are typically made from a blend of several grape varieties. The most prominent among these is the Touriga Nacional, which is considered one of Portugal's finest grape varieties.
The Dão region is relatively sheltered, being enclosed on three sides by high granite mountain ranges. This natural protection results in a temperate maritime climate, with cooler temperatures and plentiful rainfall. These conditions are perfect for vine growing.
In addition to the red wines, the Dão region also produces some excellent white wines. These are often characterized by their acidity and aroma, with the Encruzado grape variety being particularly highly valued.
Despite its long wine-making history, the Dão region remains somewhat less internationally well-known than other Portuguese wine regions such as Douro or Alentejo. However, its reputation has been growing in recent years, with many praising the unique and high-quality wines the region produces.
