The Yamhill-Carlton AVA (American Viticultural Area) is a wine region located within the larger Willamette Valley AVA in Oregon, USA. Named after two small towns, Yamhill and Carlton, this AVA is known for its well-drained, ancient marine sedimentary soils and the resulting unique flavor profiles of the wines produced there.
This region is characterized by its cool climate, making it ideal for growing Pinot Noir. The wines from this region often have darker color, deeper concentration, and excellent aging potential compared to wines from warmer regions.
Aside from Pinot Noir, Yamhill-Carlton also produces some Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and other varietals. The wineries in the region range from large, established estates to small, family-owned boutique vineyards. The terrain is made up of gentle, rolling hills and the region benefits from the rain shadow of the Oregon Coast Range which protects it from excessive rainfall.
Yamhill-Carlton AVA is also notable for its sustainable farming practices. Many vineyards employ organic and biodynamic farming methods. The close-knit community of grape growers and winemakers is dedicated to preserving the quality of the land and the integrity of the wine they produce.
