Enjoy the alfresco area on a sunny day or sit inside near the fireplace on a cold & wintry day. Built from handmade mud bricks and local timbers, their cellar door and its predominantly native garden is a welcome break for visitors to the Great Southern wine region. Here you can taste and purchase their wines and chat to their well informed staff. They are situated on the main (Albany) highway in Mount Barker, 350 km south of Western Australia’s capital city Perth and approximately 50 km north of the port city of Albany. The site was originally home to an apple packing shed, but with the demise of the local apple industry, Plantangenet Wines’ founder Tony Smith purchased the property in 1975. For many years the old wooden building was home to both the winery and the cellar door with a curtain dividing the two. When visitors arrived, Tony would pop out from behind the curtain to offer tastings at the tiny cellar door area. In the early 90’s it was decided to expand, and the current winery and mud brick cellar door were built. More recently the grounds were re-landscaped and a native garden planted. Should you take the opportunity to visit, you’ll find the majority of their wines available for tasting as well as a wonderful range of local merchandise on offer.
