Great Southern, also known as Great Southern Region, is a region of Western Australia, located in the southern part of the state. It is bordered by the Goldfields-Esperance region to the east, Wheatbelt region in the north, and Indian Ocean in the south.
Covering an area of about 39,007 square kilometres, Great Southern is known for its varied landscapes including rugged coastline, beautiful beaches, tall tree forests, farmland and wine country. The region bears a mild Mediterranean-style climate, with cool wet winters and warm dry summers.
The major industries in Great Southern include agriculture, fishing, viticulture, timber and tourism. The region is a major producer of wool, meat, grains, vegetables and wine, particularly in its subregion, the Great Southern Wine Region, which is recognized for its premium wine production.
Great Southern is home to approximately 54,000 people, with the majority living in the city of Albany, which is also the region's administrative and commercial center. Other key towns include Denmark, Katanning, and Mount Barker.
The region boasts a rich history and cultural heritage, having been inhabited by Indigenous Australians for thousands of years before European settlers arrived in the 19th century. It offers numerous natural and historic attractions like the Stirling Range National Park, Porongurup National Park, The Gap and Natural Bridge, as well as the Museum of the Great Southern showcasing the region's indigenous and colonial history.
It provides excellent opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking, whale-watching, surfing, fishing and bird-watching, attracting tourists from around the globe.
