Viura is a white wine grape primarily grown in the Rioja region of Spain. The variety is also often referred to as Macabeo and is used in the production of several types of wine including still, sparkling, and blended.
The Viura varietal is known for its high yields and resistance to disease. It favors cooler climates which help to achieve good levels of acidity. Wines made from this grape tend to have a light, fresh profile with notes of green apple, pear, flowers, and citrus. They are usually light-bodied and have a good acidity level.
These wines can be consumed young, but certain types, like those from Rioja, can also be aged, resulting in a more complex flavor profile with notes of toasted nuts, honey, and dried fruit. Viura is also a key component in Cava, Spain’s famous sparkling wine, where it often blended with Parellada and Xarel-lo grapes.
