Noiret is a red wine grape variety that was developed by Cornell University's New York State Agricultural Experiment Station. First released in 2006, this variety is a hybrid of two other grapes: NY65.0467.08 and Steuben.
The Noiret grape offers robust character with strong notes of green and black pepper along with hints of raspberry, mint, and some subtle notes of spice. The wines produced from Noiret grapes have a deep ruby color, moderate tannin levels, and a good acid balance, which contributes to its rich mouthfeel.
The vine of this varietal is moderately vigorous with high disease resistance, particularly to powdery mildew. It's typically harvested in mid to late October.
Noiret is often used in blends to contribute color and spice characteristics, but can also make varietal wines that are full-bodied with a spicy character. It is well suited to oak aging and can be cellared for moderate periods.
