Macabeu, also known as Viura, is a white wine grape varietal predominantly grown in the northern regions of Spain and Southern France. Macabeu wines are often characterized by their high acidity, which lends a refreshing crispness to the wine, and their delicate floral and citrus fruit aromas.
The wines are typically light to medium-bodied and have flavors of lemon, pear, apple, and sometimes notes of almond and honey. Macabeu wines also have the capacity to age well, with aged versions showcasing richer, nuttier flavors.
This grape is often used in the production of Cava, Spain's famous sparkling wine, where it is blended with other varietals such as Parellada and Xarel-lo. In Southern France, it is commonly used in the production of white Roussillon blends.
