Penedès is a wine-producing region located in Catalonia, northeastern Spain. It is considered one of the country's best wine-producing regions, recognized globally for its high-quality white and sparkling wines. Penedès is most famous for producing Cava, a Spanish sparkling wine, similar to French Champagne.
The region is located between the coastal hills and plains of the Mediterranean Sea to the south and the higher-altitude inland mountains to the north. Despite having relatively low annual rainfall, a wide range of microclimates throughout the region supports the growth of various grape varieties.
Penedès is divided into three sub-regions: Bajo Penedès, Medio Penedès, and Alto Penedès. Each sub-region has a distinct climate and topography, which contributes to the diversity of wines produced.
Besides being known for wine, Penedès also has a rich cultural heritage with many ancient towns and historic sites. Its vibrant festivals, traditional Catalan cuisine, beautiful landscapes, and nice weather make it a popular tourist destination.
