Garnatxa Blanca, also known as White Grenache, is a white grape varietal that originated in Spain. The grape is responsible for some of the most distinctive and characterful white wines from the northern region of Catalonia.
Wines produced from Garnatxa Blanca typically have high alcohol content and show flavors of ripe white fruit like pear and apple over a somewhat oily texture. Depending on the winemaking methods, they may exhibit nutty and buttery characteristics, with hints of herbs, citrus, honey or smoke.
These are full-bodied wines with moderate to low acidity. Some winemakers use methods like lees aging and barrel fermentation to increase the textural complexity and longevity of Garnatxa Blanca wines.
In Spain, it's a key grape in the appellations of Priorat, Terra Alta, Alella and Emporda. It's also found in substantial quantities in the French wine region of Rhône valley, and in smaller amounts in Sardinia, Italy, where it is called "Grenache Blanc".
