Fiano is a white Italian wine grape variety that is grown primarily in the Campania region of southern Italy and on the island of Sicily. In Campania, this fairly ancient grape variety was known as Latina in the middle ages and its wines were highly appreciated in the Roman era. The grape is low yielding and tends to ripen late, which gives the wines a deep golden color.
Wines made from this varietal are typically medium-bodied, with a rich and complex flavor profile that can include notes of honey, spice, nuts, pear, citrus and even smoky mineral tones. Fiano wines are often characterized by robust flavors and an aromatic bouquet, and are typically high in acidity, which makes them a good pairing for a range of foods, including fish, poultry, and dishes with rich sauces. High quality Fiano wines also have considerable aging potential.
In recent years, the Fiano varietal has also gained a foothold in Australian viticulture, where it is used to produce wines in both a fresh, fruit-forward style, and a more complex, oak-aged style.
