Dry Riesling is a white wine varietal originating from the Rhine wine region of Germany. Defined by its high acidity and low sugar content, Dry Rieslings are less sweet than other types of Rieslings. Its tasting notes often include green apple, peach, apricot, pear, and lime peel, with mineral and floral undertones. In terms of color, it can be pale to medium yellow, getting darker as it ages.
Dry Riesling pairs well with a range of foods including fish, poultry, pork, and spicy or flavorful Asian cuisine. Like most Rieslings, it can age very well, and old-world versions can develop complex flavors over several decades. The ABV (Alcohol By Volume) typically ranges from 11-12.5%. It is appreciated for its ability to reflect its terroir – that means the taste can vary greatly depending on the geographical region and soil in which the grapes were grown.
Some of the most iconic regions producing dry Riesling, apart from Germany, are Alsace in France, Australia’s Clare and Eden Valley, and the Finger Lakes region in New York, USA.
