New Zealand, also known as Aotearoa in the Maori language, is a beautiful island country located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. It consists of two main islands - the North Island (Te Ika-a-Māui) and the South Island (Te Waipounamu) - as well as around 600 smaller islands. It's known globally for its stunning landscapes from beaches, forests, and mountains, to lakes, fjords and thermal regions. In fact, its breathtaking vistas have set the backdrop for multiple films, including the famous ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy.
New Zealand's population is approximately 4.9 million, making it one of the least populated countries in the world. Maori people, the indigenous Polynesian people of New Zealand, make up around 16.5% of the population. The remaining population is primarily of European descent, with Asian and Pacific Peoples making up significant minorities.
The nation's capital city is Wellington, while its largest and most populous city is Auckland, both located in the North Island. English is the predominantly spoken language and the New Zealand Dollar (NZD) is the currency.
It's one of the best developed nations in the world, with a high-income economy and strong education and healthcare systems. The economy is largely driven by industries including tourism, agriculture, fishing, and manufacturing.
New Zealand is also reputed for being a leader in environmental conservation and sustainability efforts. It is home to a rich diversity of flora and fauna, including a number of species found nowhere else on Earth.
In terms of governance, New Zealand is a constitutional monarchy, with a parliamentary democracy. The country is also part of the Commonwealth, with Queen Elizabeth II as the reigning monarch. The Head of Government is the Prime Minister.
New Zealand is widely known for its national rugby team, the All Blacks, who have a significant record of success in the Rugby World Cup. The traditional Maori war dance, Haka, often performed by the team before matches, is recognized globally.
Finally, New Zealanders are colloquially known as 'Kiwis', after the flightless bird native to the country, which is a national symbol.
