Ribatejo is a traditional province or region of Portugal, located in the central part of the country and running along the Tagus River. It includes cities such as Santarém and Tomar. The region is known for its fertile plains (called "lezíria"), a result of the Tagus River, which has created rich, alluvial soil that makes Ribatejo a significant agricultural area.
The region's name, "Ribatejo", translates to "along the Tagus" or "upon the Tagus". Historically, the inhabitants of this area had strong ties with the river, whether for transportation, food, or agriculture.
Today, Ribatejo is a part of the Centro Region and is no longer recognized as an official province of Portugal, however its name and geographical identity still hold cultural and historical value.
The area is also known for its wine production, horse breeding (particularly the Lusitano breed), bullfighting, and traditional Portuguese music, known as "fado". The gastronomy is noteworthy as well, with dishes mainly based on local farm produce, and freshwater fish from the river.
