Óbidos is a charming, picturesque historic town located about an hour's drive north of Lisbon (or Lisboa, in Portuguese), Portugal. Known as the "Wedding Present Town", it was a gift from King Dinis to Queen Isabel on their wedding day in 1282. Encircled by a medieval fortified wall, the whitewashed houses with colorful roofs, narrow cobblestone lanes, and Gothic doorways and windows make Óbidos seem like a page from a fairy tale book.
Óbidos is renowned for its well-preserved medieval architecture. Major attractions include the well-preserved castle, which is now a high-class hotel (Pousada), the decorative Baroque-style Church of Santa Maria, and the picturesque main street, Rua Direita. The town is especially beautiful during the annual Christmas and Chocolate Festivals, and during the Medieval Market re-enactment every summer.
