San Martino della Battagla is a small town located near Desenzano Del Garda, Italy, in the province of Brescia, Lombardy region. It is particularly famous as the site of the Battle of Solferino in 1859, a major conflict during the Second Italian War of Independence.
The biggest attraction of San Martino is its imposing memorial tower, also known as the “Tower of San Martino,” dedicated to Vittorio Emanuele II, the first king of Italy. This tower stands at an impressive height of 75 meters and offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and Lake Garda.
This picturesque town also features the Ossuary Chapel of San Martino, which holds the remains of about 2,619 soldiers who died during the Battle of Solferino. Near the chapel, there is a museum that exhibits uniforms, weapons, and documents related to the battle.
In the middle of the town, there is another impressive structure, San Martino Church or Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Martino, a beautiful neo-Gothic church. The town is surrounded by vineyards, and it is also known for its fresh produce and local wines like Lugana, San Martino della Battaglia Doc.
Every year, San Martino della Battaglia hosts a historical reenactment of the Battle of Solferino, drawing crowds of tourists and history enthusiasts. This event usually involves volunteers dressed in period costumes, demonstrating various aspects of the 19th-century warfare.
