Moscato di Scanzo is an Italian sweet red wine, native to the region of Lombardy. This dessert wine is also known as Scanzo or Moscato di Scanzo Rosso. It comes from the smallest DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) region in Italy, indicating that it's a high-quality, authentic product.
Moscato di Scanzo is made from Moscato di Scanzo, a type of black Moscato grape found in the town of Scanzorosciate, some miles northeast of Bergamo. The wine has a deep red or ruby color and is often characterized by a rich, persistent aroma.
This wine is traditionally vinified passito style, which means that the grapes are dried to concentrate the sugars before they are fermented, resulting in a higher alcohol content. These wines have distinctive flavors of blackberry, roses, and spices, with a hint of sweetness perfectly balanced by acidity.
It is typically aged for at least two years, of which at least five months are in wooden barrels before being put on the market, according to the production specifications. This aging process gives the wine its complex and refined flavor.
This wine is best served at a temperature of 12-14°C and is commonly paired with pastries, dried fruit, and blue cheeses. Its relatively high sweetness level makes it a perfect dessert wine.
It’s a sought-after and appreciated wine, but production is very limited making it quite a precious product. In fact, Moscato di Scanzo is named among the rarest wines in Italy.
