Falerno del Massico is a type of wine produced in the Campania region of southern Italy, specifically from the Massico hill range. The area has a history of winemaking that dates back to Roman times, with Pliny the Elder having described Falerno wine with great appreciation.
There are two versions of Falerno del Massico, red and white. The red is made primarily from Aglianico grapes and sometimes Primitivo. These wines are typically aged for at least two years, and have potent tannins with earthy notes of cherries, dried fruit and spices. On the other hand, the less common white is made from Falanghina grapes. They display crisp and tangy flavors featuring citrus and green apple.
As of 1991, the Falerno del Massico has been distinguished with Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) status, marking its status of high-quality production. The cultivation area for this wine is quite small, encompassing only about 100 hectares.
The region's fertile soils and hot, dry climate make it ideal for growing grapes, resulting in wines that are distinct and complex in flavor. Falerno del Massico wines are often paired with hearty Italian dishes such as pasta and meat dishes.
