Epomeo is the highest mountain on the volcanic island of Ischia, in the Gulf of Naples, Italy. Standing at approximately 789 meters above sea level, the mountain offers panoramic beautiful views of the island and its surrounding ocean.
Epomeo is not a volcano itself but a horst, which is a block of the Earth's crust uplifted along faults. It is composed mostly of greenish and whitish tuff, a rock made of consolidated volcanic ash.
The mountain is a popular destination for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts due to its extensive network of trails. Along the way, visitors can explore vineyards, forests, and old, rural churches. There's also a hermitage dedicated to San Nicola located near the peak, carved directly into the rock in the 16th century.
Epomeo's location in the middle of the island makes it a prime location for observing the coastline, the nearby islands of Capri and Procida, and even Mount Vesuvius on the mainland in clear weather conditions.
The volcanic activity of Ischia which formed Epomeo also contributes to the island's famous thermal spas and hot springs, making it a popular tourist destination.
