Goumenissa is a small town and municipality in the Kilkis regional unit of Central Macedonia, Greece. The region is primarily known for its agricultural activities, including viniculture.
Goumenissa's claim to fame though, is its renowned wine, with the same name – Goumenissa. This region has been producing wines since ancient times and was officially awarded an Appellation of Origin of Superior Quality (OPAP) designation in 1979. The Goumenissa wine is a red wine, usually a blend of Xinomavro and Negoska grape varieties.
The town's local tradition and character are beautifully displayed in its architectural style. Traditional Macedonian houses can be seen in the city, as well as magnificent mansions and stone-built houses with charming courtyards.
Additionally, the area is dotted with Byzantine monuments, churches, and monasteries, reflecting the rich history and culture of the region. Every year, numerous religious and cultural festivals are held in Goumenissa, attracting visitors from near and far.
