Minervois is a popular wine-producing region in the southern part of France. It's situated in the Languedoc-Roussillon area, between the cities of Narbonne and Carcassonne. The region is known for producing high-quality red wines, primarily from Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Grenache grape varieties.
The name "Minervois" comes from the ancient Roman city Minerve, which was known for its historical and cultural significance. This region is not only famous for its wines, but also for its beautiful landscapes, olive groves, and wonderful hilltop villages.
In terms of climate, Minervois has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters that is perfect for viticulture. The soil ranges from limestone and chalk in the upland areas to alluvial soil with gravel and sand in the lower vineyards.
Minervois was granted its AOC (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée) status in 1985 and is highly respected in the wine world for its robust, characterful, and spicy wines. Some of the better-quality, old-vine Minervois wines can be aged successfully for over a decade.
Apart from wine production, Minervois is also famous for truffles and is home to a number of truffle markets and fairs, particularly during the winter months.
