Kremstal is an Austrian wine region located along the Krems river in Lower Austria. It's a small region but very famous for its unique and high-quality white wines, particularly those made from the Grüner Veltliner and Riesling grape varieties.
The terroir of Kremstal varies from vineyard to vineyard, with a blend of gravel, loess, and primary rock soils. This, combined with a complex microclimate influenced by the river and the nearby Danube, gives Kremstal wines their distinctive character. They can range from light and mineral to rich and full-bodied, often with a fine balance of fruit and acidity.
Wine production in Kremstal dates back to Roman times, and the region is full of historic wineries and beautiful vineyards. Today, it's also a popular destination for wine tourism, attracting visitors with its charming towns, stunning landscape, and excellent wine festivals and tastings.
Apart from wine, Kremstal is also known for its apricots, which are used to produce a variety of regional specialties, including spirits, jams, and desserts.
Kremstal has three quality categories for its wines: Kremstal DAC, Kremstal DAC Reserve, and Kremstal DAC Schönes. DAC stands for "Districtus Austriae Controllatus", an appellation system used in Austria to identify wines that are typical of their specific region. This means that all wines labeled Kremstal DAC should reflect the characteristic style and quality of the Kremstal region.
