The Russian River Valley is located in Sonoma County, California, and is one of the United States' premier wine regions. It is known for its cool marine climate which is heavily influenced by the Russian River and the Pacific Ocean's coastal breezes, making it ideal for growing cool-climate grapes such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
The valley is named after the Russian trappers who explored the area during the 19th century. It's about 15 miles wide, 20 miles long, and runs along the Russian River from Healdsburg to Santa Rosa, then extending towards the coast.
The soils in the Russian River Valley are diverse and include sand, clay, and gravel, contributing to the complex flavors in the wines produced here. The region is renowned for its distinct 'neighborhoods' – small, geographically distinct areas where unique combinations of soil, temperature, and exposure produce wines of unique character.
Apart from vineyards and wineries, the Russian River Valley also offers a host of outdoor activities including hiking, cycling, and canoeing, making it a popular destination for wine lovers and nature enthusiasts alike.
The Russian River Valley got its American Viticulture Area (AVA) status in 1983, and today it is home to more than 15,000 acres of vineyards and over 70 wineries. Some key towns within or adjacent to the AVA are Santa Rosa, Windsor, and Healdsburg.
