Alexander Valley is an acclaimed wine-growing region within Sonoma County, California. It is known for producing high-quality, elegant wines, especially Cabernet Sauvignon. Named after Cyrus Alexander, the valley spans over 15 miles along the Russian River, located north of Healdsburg and extending to the edges of Lake Sonoma.
It benefits from a climate that facilitates a long, even growing season with warm, dry days followed by cool nights, making it particularly suited to growing Bordeaux varietals. The valley itself is home to a range of well-drained soil types, granting further complexity to its wines.
In addition to vineyards, Alexander Valley is characterized by its rural charm, with a landscape dotted with farmhouses and beautiful vistas. There's a thriving local community of winemakers, many of whom belong to multigenerational farming families, as well as numerous wineries and tasting rooms, each presenting distinct expressions of the region's terroir.
Although Alexander Valley is best known for its Cabernet Sauvignon, it also produces acclaimed Zinfandel, Chardonnay, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc.
The area was awarded AVA (American Viticultural Area) status in 1984. Wine enthusiasts often compare this region to Napa Valley for its quality of wine but with less commercialism and more laid-back charm.
