Zweigelt is a red wine varietal that originated in Austria. It was created in 1922 by an Austrian scientist named Fritz Zweigelt who crossed St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch grape varieties.
The Zweigelt grape produces wines which are typically medium-bodied, have a bright red color and flavors reminiscent of cherries, berries and sometimes herbal notes or light spice. Wines made from Zweigelt grapes are appreciated for their soft tannins and fresh acidity.
The grape is the most widely grown red grape in Austria, and is known for being versatile in the winemaking process, being used to make both dry and sweet wines, as well as red sparkling wines, and rose.
In terms of food pairing, Zweigelt wine goes well with a wide range of foods including grilled meats, sausages, and even certain types of fish. It can also be enjoyed on its own.
Aside from Austria, Zweigelt is also grown in Canada, specifically in the Okanagan Valley region of British Columbia, and in limited quantities in countries like Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
