Viognier is a white wine grape variety known for producing aromatic, full-bodied wines. The varietal, originally native to France’s Northern Rhône region, has established a strong presence in wine regions around the world.
The wines made from Viognier grapes commonly exhibit strong floral scents, like honeysuckle and orange blossom, coupled with stone fruit flavors such as peach, apricot, nectarine and sometimes more exotic notes such as mango. Many Viognier wines also have a creamy and soft character with a hint of richness, brought on by the occasional use of oak aging.
Its high natural sugar levels can either be used to produce sweet late-harvest wines or be fermented to make dry, high-alcohol wines. Despite the abundant flavors, Viognier wines typically lack acidity, making them best to be enjoyed in their youth.
Because of its strong flavor profile, Viognier pairs well with equally strong foods, like spicy Asian cuisine, rich fish, lobster and even certain types of cheese.
