Teroldego is a red Italian grape variety primarily grown in the Trentino region of northern Italy. This varietal is known for its intense color, typically a deep, inky garnet.
Wines made from Teroldego grapes are full-bodied and robust, with high acidity and strong tannins. They are noted for their rich flavors of black and red fruits, including cherry, raspberry, and blackberry, often layered with hints of earthiness, bitter almond, cocoa, and herbs. Some versions can also exhibit spicy or smoky characteristics.
Teroldego wines can be enjoyed young, but they also have a remarkable capacity for aging, during which the flavors can develop a greater complexity. This grape variety is sometimes used in blends, contributing color and structure to the wine.
Vineyards for Teroldego are usually located in the alluvial soils of the Piana Rotaliana, a plain located in the valley of the Adige river. Because of their uniqueness and quality, wines produced from Teroldego have earned the DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) status, an Italian quality assurance label for food products and especially wines.
