Refosco is a family of dark-skinned grape varietals native to the northern Italian regions of Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Veneto. The most famous and widely planted is Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, known for its red stems.
Refosco wines are typically deeply colored and have a medium body. They are known for their distinctly tart and bold profile, featuring flavors of blackberries, black cherries, and plums, often accompanied by notes of almond, and herbal nuances. The wines are aromatic, often showing aromas of violet and rose. They are generally high in acidity and have a robust tannin structure, which makes them perfect to enjoy with fatty and rich dishes.
Depending on the winemaking style, Refosco wines can be quite approachable in their youth, but their high acidity and solid tannin foundation also give them victory potential. The wines are often aged in oak, adding complexity and depth to them.
One of the most popular Refosco-based wines is Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, named after the red stalks (peduncles) to which its grape clusters are attached. It is known to produce deeply colored, full-bodied wines, with a rich and intense flavor profile.
