Malvasia is a group of wine grape varietals that originated in the Mediterranean region. It includes both white and red grapes, some of which are used to produce dessert wines. Malvasias tend to produce wines with a strong aroma and flavor, often described as nutty or fruity, particularly reminiscent of ripe peaches or apricots. Other common notes can include honey, cloves, or orange peel. Depending on the particular varietal and winemaking process, Malvasia wines can be light and dry, rich and sweet, or even sparkling. They are often high in alcohol and can be slightly bitter. Some of the most well-known types of Malvasia are Malvasia Bianca, Malvasia di Candia, Malvasia Nera and Malvasia Istriana.
