Grignolino is a red wine grape variety that originated in the Piedmont region of Italy. The name derives from "grignole", a local term for the numerous seeds or pips in the fruit – which contribute to the wine's characteristic strong, bitter tannins. The Grignolino wines tend to have a light, pale ruby color somewhat similar to rosé, and a delicate bouquet.
Wine made from the Grignolino grape is typically light-bodied, with high acidity and a distinct herbal or strawberry-like aroma. Despite its light color, it delivers unexpectedly robust flavors of tart red fruits, white pepper, and dried herb. It can be somewhat austere in terms of fruit, and the tannins are often described as 'rustic'.
Grignolino wines are best enjoyed young, as their high acidity and tannin content does not lend them particularly well to aging. They pair well with a variety of foods, particularly vegetable dishes, light meats, and cheeses.
