Whetstone Wine Cellars

The center piece of our property is a 19th Century, French-style Chateau built by Hamden W. McIntyre, an expert in gravity-flow winery design. McIntyre designed several local gravity-flow wineries, including: Eschol (now Trefethen), the Seneca Ewer (Beaulieu), Greystone and Inglenook (Rubicon). In 1885 construction was complete of the “Hedgeside” winery and co-located distillery operations and caves. Many phases of the building have come and gone since 1885. From family deaths, the business changing hands, 14 years of Prohibition, but the beauty of the estate has always remained. Whether enjoying some of our Sonoma Coast or Russian River Valley Pinot Noirs, Carneros Chardonnay, cult favorite Russian River Valley Viognier, or Napa Valley Syrah we relish the opportunity to indulge your wine country experience. I started out my winemaking education at Turley Wine Cellars back in 1998 where learning how to change the clutch on a tractor was more valued than knowledge of Bordeaux First Growths. I was able to take a sabbatical one summer to work for the Seysses family at Domaine Dujac in Morey St Denis which cemented my love for Pinot Noir. After returning from France I founded Whetstone in 2002 while still apprenticing at Turley. In 2005 I left Turley and began to grow Whetstone on my own. The most significant change in the trajectory of Whetstone has been the full time addition of my wife Michelle. Her idea of sales was simple: we should be more in touch with the lost art of face to face conversation than our smart phones. She also discovered the property we now call home to Whetstone. She runs the Tasting Room, Wine Club, Mailer, Event Planning, staff and just about everything else this side of winemaking, vineyard management, and national sales. The quality of our wines coupled with the gorgeous Chateau setting, relaxed atmosphere, and personal touch make for a very unique Napa Valley experience.
