Romeo Vineyards and Cellars
Located in Pillar Point Harbor in Half Moon Bay, California, there’s an abandoned pier known as Romeo Pier. It was built in 1940 by Frank Romeo’s father, Joe Romeo, for the A. Romeo Fish Company – in order to buy directly from fishermen for his fish market, which supplied hotels and restaurants in the San Francisco bay area.
In 1946, Joe separated from A. Romeo Fish Company and started Romeo Packing Co, a fish cannery that processed and packed sardines and mackerel. The company’s logo was a fish with glasses named Charlie, after Joe’s oldest son. Years later, the logo was sold to Star-Kist, was redesigned, and became known as ‘Charlie the Tuna’.
The 1950’s brought an end to sardine fishing in the area. Undeterred, without a future in the fish business, Joe got involved in making fish fertilizer for the agricultural industry. As time passed, his son Charlie joined his father to help develop a new line of blended fertilizers. These new blended products offered growers a choice of organic sources as well as new modern technology.
With the fertilizer division up and running Joe took on another challenge of making a machine to manufacture paper plant sleeves. Until the, all sleeves were hand made. After seven years of trial and error, Joe succeeded in automating the process by 1975. Joe’s youngest son, Frank who was also brought up in the family business helped develop Romeo Packing Co. into one of the west coast’s top paper sleeve producers.
Romeo Vineyards & Cellars is located in the heart of Napa Valley and was purchased in 1996 by Frank and Eugenia 'Gena' Romeo. Motivated by a desire to create and live a lifestyle that represented the Romeo family’s entrepreneurial spirit, they began their journey to craft a legendary Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
