Description

Gold Hill Vineyard was founded in 1980 by Hank Battjes.

Hank worked for 27 years as an electrical engineer at GTE. During those years, Hank increased his knowledge of home wine making, applying it to his hobby and passion. Pursuing his dream he searched for suitable land and when a friend, Bruce, suggested 5 acres of vineyard on an 80 acre parcel near Coloma, California, he bought it. Bruce still visits the now much larger vineyard, winery and brewery.

For the next 10 years Hank commuted from his Palo Alto home, expanding the vineyard to 40 acres. By 1985 the winery was bonded and in 1989 Hank completed the process of hobby to award-winning winery.
Over time ten more acres were planted, creating today's 50 acre vineyard.

Gold Hill Vineyard has been producing gold medal winning Bordeaux style reds and Chardonnay since 1985 and for ten years has offered award winning Italian and Rhone varietals. Gold Hill's barrel room houses 2,500 cases of award winning wines produced annually.
A long-term approach is taken in sustainable vineyard management. As the French write: "As long as man seeks to correct nature instead of listening to her, following her, and helping her, he will be on the road of error."
