Syrah is a dark-skinned red wine grape. Its origins are believed to be from the Rhône region in southeastern France. Syrah wines are known for their full body, strong tannins and high acidity, which make them a good variety for aging.
On the palate, Syrah wine can be quite lush and presents flavors of dark berries, plums, and even some smokiness. In terms of aroma, the wine might carry the scent of black or blueberries, black cherry, black pepper, clove, mint, or even chocolate.
In cooler climates, Syrah tends to produce wines with more notes of pepper, floral elements, and high acidity, while in warmer climates, it can have more notes of dark fruit flavors and chocolate overtones. Some of the most famous Syrah wines come from Northern Rhone Valley, Australia and California.
Due to Syrah's bold flavor profile, the wine pairs well with a variety of meats including beef, lamb, and venison. It also can be paired with food with a lot of spices.
Lastly, Syrah is also often used in blends to add color and body. It's a common ingredient in the famous GSM blend - Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre.
