Sylvaner is a white grape varietal that originated in eastern France. Its wines are typically characterized by high acidity, light to medium body, and relatively neutral flavors, with aspects of green apple, pear, and stone fruit. While often not heavily aromatic, Sylvaner can express subtle floral and herbal notes. It is particularly known in the Alsace region of France and in Germany, where it is also called Silvaner. This varietal is often used in blends, contributes to the production of dessert wines, and can produce dry, minerally wines when grown in certain terroirs. Despite its historic prevalence, Sylvaner has lost popularity in recent times, but there are still vintners making quality wines from this grape.
