Sauvignon Gris is a pink-skinned cousin of Sauvignon Blanc, originating from the Bordeaux region of France. The varietal is distinguished by its light pink or grayish-blue grapes, a factor that contributes to its name, 'Gris', meaning 'gray' in French.
Sauvignon Gris is less aromatic than Sauvignon Blanc, but it is still highly valued for its complex flavor profile. It exhibits a mix of intense fruity flavors, dominated by hints of citrus, peach, and passion fruit with subtle notes of spices and flowers. It's recognized for its rich, full-bodied mouthfeel and a surprisingly high level of alcohol content.
Although it was nearly extinct in the late 20th century, this varietal has experienced a revival in recent years and can notably be found in wine regions like Bordeaux, Chile, and New Zealand. It is mainly blended with Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon for complexity, but 100% Sauvignon Gris wines are also available, appreciated for their unique taste and ripening potential.
