The Rossanne varietal is a rare white wine grape variety found mainly in northern Rhône Valley region of France. The grape is almost extinct and is often used in blends. Wine produced from Rossanne grapes tends to be full-bodied and possesses an aromatic profile that includes floral, pear, peach, and herbal notes. It also has notable acidity. This grape is often used in blends to provide more structure and complexity. Notably, it is an approved grape in the production of some Côtes du Rhône white wines. Its peak ripeness tends to be late in the harvest season, typically making it the last variety to be harvested in the vineyards where it is grown. Its resistance to diseases varies depending on environmental conditions, but it is known to resist mistral winds and drought well.
In more recent years, there has been a movement to revive this variety, and traditional blended wines that use Rossanne are becoming more popular. These wines are often described as being more on the rustic side, meant to be enjoyed young, and less on the fruit-focused side. However, well-made Rossanne wines can also be aged for a few years to develop richer flavors.
