The Prairie Star varietal is a white wine grape indigenous to the United States, specifically Minnesota. It was developed by the University of Minnesota as a hardy grape capable of withstanding the cold winters of the upper Midwest. The Prairie Star is known for its high levels of acidity and citrusy flavors, often described as similar to Granny Smith apples.
The wines produced from the Prairie Star varietal are light-bodied with a crisp, refreshing mouthfeel. They often feature aromatic notes of green apple, citrus and melon, with a subtle floral undertone. The high acidity of these wines makes them an excellent choice for pairing with rich, creamy foods or as a refreshing palate cleanser.
Despite being a relatively recent creation, with the first vines being released in 2002, the Prairie Star has already made significant inroads in the midwestern wine markets. Its hardy nature and delightful, crisp flavor profile ensure that it will be a staple of the area's winemaking for years to come.
