"Piesporter" is not actually a varietal, but it refers to a series of vineyard sites along the Mosel River in Germany, known for producing top-quality Riesling grapes. However, Piesporter can also refer to a range of wines from this region, which may include not only Riesling but also Müller-Thurgau and Elbling, among others.
These wines are often characterized by a notable minerality, given the slate-heavy soils in which the vines are grown. They also usually exhibit vibrant fruity characteristics (like citrus, green apple, and apricot), and can be made in a range of sweetness levels, from very dry to quite sweet. However, most are semi-dry and possess a vibrant acidity that balances out the sweetness. The best examples can age well and develop complex, smoky or honeyed nuances over time.
Piesporter wines are a significant part of the Mosel’s prestigious wine culture and are widely appreciated for their distinctive flavor profile and high quality.
