Picpoul is a white wine grape variety that is native to the Languedoc region in France. It is also known as Piquepoul.
The name "Picpoul" translates to "stings the lip" in French, a reference to the grape's high acidity levels. This high acidity makes it an ideal pairing for seafood, particularly oysters, and other rich, salty dishes.
Picpoul wines are typically light to medium bodied, with crisp, citrusy flavors and floral aromas. They tend to have a refreshing, zesty character and often display mineral notes due to the limestone soil in which the vines are grown.
The Picpoul grape is also one of the thirteen permitted varietals in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, although it is not widely used.
Aside from France, Picpoul is also grown in parts of California and Spain.
