Macabeo, also known as Viura, is a white grape varietal primarily grown in Spain, particularly in the Rioja region. It's one of the three main grapes used in the production of Cava, a sparkling wine from Spain. As a single varietal, it produces light, fresh wines with high acidity and flavors of green apple, citrus, and floral notes. It also often features subtle notes of almond and honey. When aged in oak, Macabeo wines can have a richer, creamier texture with more complex flavors. Despite its delicate flavors, it is known to have good aging potential.
