Fumé Blanc is a wine grape variety that is a member of the Sauvignon Blanc family. It was first introduced in the United States in the late 1960s by winemaker Robert Mondavi who famously renamed his dry-fermented Sauvignon Blanc to Fumé Blanc.
The name "Fumé Blanc" was inspired by Pouilly-Fumé, a popular dry-style Loire Valley wine made from Sauvignon Blanc. The 'Fumé' in the name refers to the fog that often surrounds the vineyards in the Loire Valley.
The wine has flavors that are similar to those of Sauvignon Blanc – citrus, green apple, and gooseberry – but, thanks to the usage of oak age during the production process, it can also have smoky, toasty, and vanilla hints.
The varietal is known for its refreshing, crisp, and aromatic character with high acidity. Due to its versatility, Fumé Blanc pairs well with a variety of dishes including seafood, poultry, and dishes with cream sauces.
