Freisamer is a white grape varietal primarily grown in Germany. It was derived from a crossing between the grape varieties Silvaner and Pinot gris. This grape type is hardly cultivated outside of Germany.
The Freisamer vine is a late-ripening variety, hence its cultivation is only recommended for good vineyard sites. It is highly prone to fungal diseases which can affect the yield and quality of the grapes.
The wines made from Freisamers typically have a slight Muscat aroma and are often semi-dry or sweet. They are generally medium-bodied with moderate acidity and exhibit floral and stone fruit flavor notes. Despite being quite aromatic and flavorful, wines made from the Freisamer varietal are not very well-known and are not as commonly produced as other German wines.
