De Chaunac is a French-American hybrid wine grape variety that produces versatile, full-bodied, red wines with low-key flavors. It was named after the Sieur de Chaunac, a French loyalist to King Louis XIV and was developed in France in the early 1860s.
De Chaunac grapevines are hardy, resistant to diseases, and preferred for cooler climates where other grape varieties might not reliably ripen. It is widely grown in the northeastern region of North America, particularly in New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, and on a small scale in Ontario and Quebec in Canada.
The wine produced from De Chaunac grapes is typically rich, deep in color, rustic and has black fruit flavors. Its wines can be enjoyed young and can benefit from a bit of aging. These wines often exhibit spicy and earthy undertones when matured. It is usually used to make a dry or semi-dry wine and can be blended with other grape varieties.
